South Korean company Samsung C&T Corp. signed a $630 million deal to build a massive solar power plant in Qatar, Yonhap news agency reported on August 24.
Under an agreement with QatarEnergy, Qatar’s state-owned construction arm, Samsung Group’s construction arm will build a 417-megawatt solar plant at Mesaieed, about 40km south of Qatar’s capital, Doha.
It will also build a 458-megawatt solar power plant at Ras Laffan, an industrial complex about 80 kilometers north of Doha.
Samsung C&T said the two solar power plants would be built on a total area of 10 km², equivalent to 1,400 football fields, and 1.6 million solar panels will be installed.
The foundation will be laid in September and the power plant is expected to be completed in November 2024.
Samsung C&T said that the electricity generated by solar power plants will be supplied to power facilities in industrial parks owned by QatarEnergy and to the Qatar national power grid.
