Following reports of BYD’s interest, the state leader of Germany’s Saarland stated on Friday that the state would not prevent Chinese electric automaker BYD from becoming a potential investor for a Ford auto plant. Ford is looking for new ownership.
An American-owned company Ford took several moves that the state didn’t agree with. Anke Rehlinger told the media that regarding the potential BYD offers the country of origin is not the sole factor.
The Ford factory in Saarlouis will stop producing its current Ford Focus model starting in 2025. The Wall Street Journal in a story from late January cited BYD as one of fifteen investors interested in taking over the facility.
An announcement comes before the end of the first quarter on the search for a new investor between the state government and Ford.
Chinese automaker is gaining headway in the European EV market
Even as European businesses lose market share in China, Chinese manufacturers of electric vehicles are gaining headway into the European market. Although its executive vice president told Bloomberg this week that it would prefer to develop its own plants than buy existing ones, BYD has stated that it is exploring locations in Europe.
Germany is currently debating how to lessen its reliance on China economically in order to guard against potential geopolitical conflicts without alienating a significant and quickly expanding consumer market.
It is critical that we reinforce the fact that there are situations and conditions in China that we do not agree with from the perspective of human rights, the state representatives said. They added that Svolt, a Chinese battery cell manufacturer with a facility in Saarland, has also been a success for the state.
