UK urged to push renewables in face of high energy costs

Renewable energy trade organizations in the United Kingdom are urging the government to prioritize clean energy development in order to prevent susceptibility to rising energy prices.

In response to Ofgem’s energy price cap and the government’s pledges to help people pay their energy bills, RenewableUK chief executive Dan McGrail said that the UK needs to phase out fossil fuels “as soon as practical.”, renews.biz reports.

While the chancellor’s initiatives to assist people dealing with the “eye-watering surge in international gas prices” are commendable, he feels that the UK should phase out fossil fuels “as quickly as feasible to provide long-term energy security and predictability for consumers.”

He went on to argue that according to Ofgem data, green levies are dropping, therefore anybody blaming renewables and net zero is fundamentally misinformed.

“Let’s be clear: this is a crisis brought on by increasing fuel prices.” “In the last three months of 2021, wind and solar power were so cheap that they actually paid back nearly £160 million to users, lowering energy bills.” McGrail elaborated.

According to him, the road out of volatile and unmanageable gas prices is crystal clear: investing in the green future delivers low-cost stable power while also expediting the UK’s transition to net zero as soon as possible.

According to Solar Energy UK CEO Chris Hewett, the “short-term options” provided by HM Treasury are inadequate.

He went on to suggest that the government must seek long-term structural reforms to reduce the UK economy’s susceptibility on unpredictable and high-cost fossil fuel markets by encouraging the growth of low-cost domestic renewable energy sources like solar. Greener is less costly right now.
