Romania will accelerate the construction of small modular reactors to develop civil nuclear power, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said.
At a joint press conference following a meeting with visiting Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, the Romanian leader said that his country would expand the production capacity of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant to meet the needs of the energy system.
“Probably we will have small modular nuclear reactors in a relatively short time frame,” he said.
According to the president, Romania will also make efforts to develop green energy.
“We will have renewable energy sources. Of course, we will have higher and higher hydrogen energy production,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Belgium noted that his country had decided to extend the operation of nuclear power plants.
According to him, at the European level, the factor of nuclear energy is not ignored, but is part of the energy structure.
